Icon HD is the most amazing dive computer I’ve ever held in my hands! If you switch on you imagination again – it looks more like underwater iPhone or something! When you see all of those icons on the display – your finger will definitely reach out to touch the screen as if it is a real touch-screen!

And I won’t be surprised if in few years Mares will come up with the solution of touch-screen or even with the realization of an idea of sending sms to the surface and to your buddies for better communication!

Mares used smartphone technology to create TFT QVGA display with resolution 320x240 pixels.

Mares Icon HD can be recommended dive computer for very beginners in diving and advanced recreational divers.

Mares Icon HD has 4 buttons located on the bottom side. They are quite big and easy accessible. Display has 2 modes of operation:

  1. Extended mode – numerical and bar graphs representation of vital information;
  2. Profile mode – graphical, numerical, and bar graphs representation of data

And you may switch between them at any time.

When you turn Mares Icon HD on – it gives you set of icons, which give you an access to menus, submenus and all functions of this dive computer.

Also it has 2 bar graphs:

  1. Nitrogen Loading Bar Graph (shows your no-decompression and decompression status) from the left side;
  2. Descent/Ascent Rate Bar Graph from the right

They are viewable both – at Extended or Profile modes of display.

Before diving we need to set up variety of data for proper calculation. Mares Icon HD has very intuitive set of menus and there are, actually, not many parameters to set.

This dive computer is very user friendly, like the most of Mares scuba equipment, and because of that we won't have any troubles with setting it for diving and diving itself!

Mares Icon HD: Diving With Air & Nitrox

Mares Icon HD has two types of display - Extended and Profile.

Mares Icon HD NO-DECO Card

Copy this Mares Icon HD No-Deco Diving Display Card for your Reference and Share with your friends and buddies!

When you switch to Profile type of display – you will have nice graphical representation of your dive profile with all necessary attributes of the current conditions of diving.

When you reach certain conditions, Icon HD may give you Safety Stop prompt or series of 1 minute Deep stops. All related information displayed at the Extended and Profile types of display.

After you started ascending, dive computer starts monitoring your ascent rate and notify you if the rate of ascent is more than allowable at certain depths. If this happened – you would hear an alarm, red horizontal bar with ‘Fast Ascent’ message and red arrows on the Descent/Ascent Rate Bar Graph on the right side. It will definitely make you slow down!

When we have No-Decompression Time Remaining is 1 minute - dive computer beeps to warn us that we are close to exceeding our No-Decompression Limits (NDLs). And if we exceeded them, Mares Icon HD would activate Decompression mode with audio alarm and all calculations from this moment would be for that mode only.

Mares Icon HD has control for ‘Omitted Decompression Stops’ in ‘Extended’ and ‘Profile’ display modes with all appropriate attributes and alarms. If you missed Decompression stop and didn't return to the depth required by some reason - dive computer would function as a depth gauge and timer only.

If you reached oxygen toxicity level of 75% - the value on the display would become red and you must ascend. When you reach the depth at which partial pressure of oxygen PO2 will exceed maximum limit you entered before diving – you will get an audible alarm and that depth value becomes red and that noisy alarm goes on and on until you ascend to the depth within the corresponding PO2.

And, of course, if your level of oxygen toxicity reaches 100% - you must terminate the dive!

As you have already learnt, Mares Icon HD has a possibility of setting for up to 3 Nitrox gas mixes: Mix 1: 21% - 50%, Mix 2 & 3: 21% - 99%.

When you enable the function of changing gas mix for Nitrox diving, dive computer will give you an alarm at the certain depth, when proper gas mix is supposed to be changed. And it allows you to swap gases only at permissible depth for corresponding gas mix.

Mares Icon HD: Diving In GAUGE Mode

When Gauge dive mode set – Mares Icon HD works as a timer, depth gauge and stopwatch only and doesn’t perform computations of No-Decompression Limits, or nitrogen and oxygen absorption.

And below is an example of dive data from Extended type of dysplay:

  • current depth;
  • max depth reached during a dive;
  • Elapsed Dive Time (EDT);
  • temperature;
  • Descent/Ascent Rate Bar Graph;
  • Stopwatch display, etc.

And you may activate Compass mode any time whether you on surface or underwater.

Mares Icon HD may display coloured pictures and maps for the dive sites. Image stays static, it doesn't move while you're swimming as a GPS thing, but this ability to store and display maps greatly helps for better orientation underwater, anyway!

Back to Top

After the dive we got out of water and got relaxed in our boat. This time Mares Icon HD gives us access to the following modes and functions:

  1. Plan mode: Scrolling of No-decompression limits – this function allows you to see your bottom times and depths down to 48 meters for for the next dive regarding the residual nitrogen from previous dive;
  2. Log Book – digital and graphical view;
  3. Upload and download dive data from and to PC;
  4. Recharge battery;
  5. Software Upgrade;
  6. Reset Mares Icon HD - this function allows us to clear residual nitrogen memory (can be useful for renting purposes)

Mares Icon HD: What Divers Say

  • excellent dive computer, good visibility on the screen even in water with poor visibility, many fantastic features;
  • simplicity of use and reliability;
  • air integration;
  • dive site maps and pictures upload, dive graph visible during the dive;
  • easy to do battery recharging via the USB connection and charging station adapter;
  • firmware easily upgradeable by the diver...

  • battery lasts only for 5-7 dives before recharging;
  • PC Dive Orginizer software needs some work, but usable

If you want to have cutting-edge and one of the best dive computers in nowadays’ scuba market, if you want to have a possibility of viewing dive site maps under water in full colour, and if you budget is substantial enough – this miracle from Mares is for you!d Mares Icon HD may be recommended dive computer not only for advanced recreational divers with thick wallet, but also it will work perfectly for the bold beginners in diving.

P Factor

P Factor is way too conservative. While my dive buddies were still taking pictures of the reef I was forced to shallower depths missing out on a lot of great macro shots. Very disappointed.

Price Difference Of Units

That's an answer to previous reviewer Tom's G. concerns about price differences in variety of dive shops. Mares Icon HD listed on this portal goes without wireless transmitter. That's way it shows lower price as a single unit. Probably, Tom, you saw this dive computer with Transmitter included, so end price was much higher!

Love it but not THAT much...

The price listed is off... WAY off. I spent a fair amount of time researching and looking over different dive computers and absolutely fell in love with this dive computer! I was then broadsided by the difference in price listed compered to every other website, including this site's own link provided.... a $575 difference! Sticker shock then set in and I'm afraid that I will not be purchasing.

Still looks to be an AMAZING computer but I'd rather spend that cash on plane tickets to go dive...

Quality Seeing Colour Maps Underwater

In addition to all other outstanding functions, one of my favourite features of Mares Icon HD - downloading and viewing full colour maps of dive sites! Of course they are still pictures and don't show any movement when I swim. But it is much more convenient exploring wrecks and distinguishing fish when I have pictures of them in front of me!

Mares Icon HD - My First Underwater Smartphone!

I've bought Mares Icon HD with Transmitter from Leisure Pro half a year ago, and logged 30 dives already.

Display is easy to read and with perfect layout; easy visible under any condition and angle.I can read coloured display more comfortably - green & red areas make dive data more intuitive.

Very user-friendly documentation and user interface. Compass is usefull too and its calibration went without any problems. Air integration works fine and I enjoy Air Time Remaining and real bottom time calculations during diving.

I have only two Cons: 1. Higher price for Transmitter to compare with other brands; 2. Battery drains too fast. It lasts me 5 dives, so it's not very comfortable if I go liveaboard diving.

Best Display Readability And Contrast In Mares Icon HD

This is my first wrist unit dive computer, before I had Suunto models and they were dive watch computers.

I was stunned with the quality of picture and sharp contrast that Icon HD produced and all it is in full colour!

In any diving conditions I am fully aware and well-informed. Icon HD came with excellent user manual and I was ready to dive after familiarizing myself very quick! I may switch between dive profile display and digital display modes if I want to. In digital display mode all stops and timings are shown at the right side with the appropriate colours and it is very convenient.

Downloading pictures and dive maps - that's just awesome! Integrated digital compass is very useful thing as well - I don't need to wear compass separately anymore.

One downside of this dive computer - battery getting flat too fast! I need to recharge Icon HD after every 5-6 dives, but I don't see it as an issue.

I could describe all functions I love for long time, but we already have one good main review on this page, so I will stop here. Mares Icon HD is perfect addition to my other scuba gear!
