Mares Puck is a recommended dive computer as an entry level that has all features for diving with air, nitrox, or using it as a gauge (bottom timer). It may be easily used by the beginners in scuba diving and advanced divers as backup dive equipment, thanks all the features and benefits it gives to the user. Dive computer comes with 2 years warranty. It has optional features:

  • PC interface named Drak, and you may buy this thing for around USD80-110. I think it’s a bit overpriced, but it is better to have it if you want to have more extensive storage for the dive logs, and then view and organize data from your previous dives later;
  • Lens Protector will cost you around USD10-12, and it is worth to have, because Puck doesn’t have mineral glass on its display.

Mares Puck can be used as a wrist unit or it can be easily fixed into the consoles:

  • Mission Puck 2 Console – this one is with pressure gauge;
  • Mission Puck 3 Console – this has compass as a convenient addition

Mares Puck has only 1 control button for an easy access and programming, and 1 bar graph for ascent rate representation.

As with Puck Air, this dive computer will give you main and alternative screens on surface and underwater, and to see additional information displayed - press button to swap between displays.

All digits are big enough and clearly seen with and without plastic display protector. Display is intuitive and data is easy to interpret.

We set our Mares Puck to PREDIVE mode before going into water and when computer senses depth more than 1.2 meters for more than 20 seconds - it will activate preset dive type (Air, Nitrox (EAN), or Gauge), starts recording your dive profile, and displays following dive data if set for Air in No-Decompression mode.

Mares Puck: Diving With Air & Nitrox

Mares Puck NO-DECO Card

When Mares Puck is set for Nitrox - displays look similar, but two critical values in regards to diving with Nitrox are displayed - %CNS (your oxygen toxicity level) and FO2.

During diving with Nitrox computer calculates other crucial parameters, which are typical for nitrox dives. Those parameters are:

  • PPO2 - High PO2 alarm goes on if current value exceeds the maximum value that you programmed in SET MODE;
  • Oxygen toxicity (%CNS) – alarm goes on if value exceeded 75%

Mares Puck may give us Safety Stop prompt if we get below 10 meters and then start ascending or series of 1 minute Deep stops if we are in Decompression dive mode, or if we are close to No-Decompression limits.

After you started ascending, dive computer activates ascent rate algorithm and notify you if the rate of ascent is more than 12m/min (39ft/min) – it shows full bar with all segments, gives you message SLOW, and beeps on you.

If we exceed NO-Decompression Limits (NDLs) - dive computer will activate Decompression mode to help us perform decompression procedure and resurface safely.

Mares Puck manages Decompression stops by graphically displaying two triangles (arrows). They are easy to understand and follow:

  • when it displays 2 triangles (arrows) at the same time - we are at the correct depth;
  • when we see downward arrow - we are at shallower depth than required and need to descend;
  • upward arrow shows us that we are deeper than decompression stop depth required and must ascend

Below you may see a summary from main and alternative displayes of what values will be shown during diving with Air in Decompression mode:

  • DEC icon;
  • current depth;
  • deepest Decompression Stop depth;
  • duration of the deepest Decompression Stop;
  • Deep Stop icon (if Deep Stop required);
  • Ascent time;
  • Altitude program;
  • Personal Correction Factor;
  • temperature;
  • type of dive - Air, etc.

When you get Decompression mode while diving with Nitrox - display will look mainly the same as with Air, but few more values will be displayed:

  • FO2;
  • %CNS;
  • type of dive - Nitrox (EAN)

Mares Puck: Diving In GAUGE Mode

In Gauge mode computer doesn’t perform any calculations for No-Decompression Limits or for Decompression stops times. It works as a timer and depth gauge only.

During this mode, this dive computer has number of displays to assist you on your way down and up. It will show:

  • Elapsed Dive Time (EDT);
  • current depth;
  • Ascent rate;
  • temperature;
  • max depth reached;
  • type of water (salt/fresh);
  • units;
  • type of dive (Bt - Bottom timer)

After diving we may easy access following modes by using just 1 button of Mares Puck !  List of them you will find below:

  1. No-Fly icon and countdown timer;
  2. Desaturation countdown timer;
  3. PC mode - transfer Logbook dive profiles to your PC by using optional interface;
  4. Logbook that can store up to 40 dive hours with 20 seconds sampling rate;
  5. Dive Planner – scrolling of No-Decompression Limits within the range of 12 - 48 meters, according to residual nitrogen saturation from your previous dives, and if Puck set for Nitrox - maximum depths are calculated according to preset values of FO2 and PO2;
  6. System Mode – dive computer's serial number, firmware version, battery status

Mares Puck: What Divers Say

Positives

  • easy to follow directions to set up and use;
  • large screen and super easy scroll-through menu;
  • price is extremely competitive with similar and even more advanced dive computers;
  • easy replaceable battery by diver

Negatives

  • wrist strap assembly may not be reliable

Mares Puck is a recommended dive computer and perfect choice for the beginners and recreational divers, who have Nitrox Certification and want to buy an easy, straightforward and streamlined scuba dive computer, but at the same time, computer that meets the requirements of diving with nitrox in No-Decompression or Decompression conditions, and can be used as a gauge (bottom timer).

And, by the way, you will not pay too much as well! Isn’t it nice – fully functional nitrox and gauge dive computer for such a price!

Main inconveniences, I think, is no battery 'hot swap'.

I've heard some complaints about optional PC interface and lack STEP BACK feature in menus, but I think these inconveniences can’t be considered as a disadvantage, and with 1-button-access dive computers menus go one after another. It has Drak PC interface and you need to buy it as an accessory and regularly transfer data from Puck to PC.

As from my personal experience, Mares Puck dive computer is one of the easiest and the most user - friendly dive computers I’ve ever used - and this is a main benefit for us! And it’s perfect choice for the beginners, thanks to not only excellent structured documentation, but also easy data access and programming, using just one button – you don’t need to memorize strange button combinations, if you have 3 or 4 of them!

Mares Puck - Dive Computer Number One For The Beginners!

I've bought Mares Puck from this site for my AWD certification. I may say that this dive computer is the best for those who just started diving and for people who have never had dive computer before! It has excellent user documentation and very intuitive user interface and very easy to read display.

To set up or read data I don't need to press to many buttons - just one button does it all! Mares Puck has many safety functions, like Deep ans Safety Stops, manual Safety Factor and Altitude adjustments. I could replace battery with ease and PC interface works with no problems!

I recommend Mares Puck to the beginners and all divers who want to have straightforward, easy to learn and dive, and reliable dive computer with great price!

Great Mares Puck

Great dive computer! I've been looking around for a while, thinking on which computer to go for.

For the price and features Mares Puck is one of the best on the market. I started using it the same day it arrived after reading the user manual. I quickly set-up the configuration with one button - really made for an easy access!

It worked great on a 30 m wreck dive and shallower profile. It was easy to read and operate.

Great product and I am very satisfied, can recommend Mares Puck to every diver who doesn't require computer with air integration and separate freedive mode.
