Mixed gas dive computer is a device that supports not only diving with Air and Nitrox, like overwhelming majority of the dive computers around, but also diving with trimix. Trimix is a gas mix with certain percentage of helium.

Dive-Computer-Wizard.com presents two mixed gas dive computers and both of them are from Suunto: HelO2 and D9tx. These Suunto dive computers use special technical RGBM algorithm to calculate helium component. And these instruments are only for open circuits. We won't discuss here instruments for rebreathers (closed circuit), like Delta VRx, Delta NHeO3 or Dive Rite Nitek X.

Suunto HelO2 Review

 

 

Before diving, we need to plan the dive and Suunto Dive Planner (SDP) is an essential part of this preparation. With Suunto HelO2 most of the settings are programmed with SDP, but we may do it manually as well. HelO2 must be in Mixed Gas dive mode during gas setting.

First of all, by using this software technical diver programs maximum depth and bottom time for his/her mixed gas dive computer. After that - we should plan our mixes: travel, bottom and decompression. Then Dive Planner will calculate decompression schedule, swapping gases and decompression routine, according to our pre-planned mixes. When everithing is ready - Dive Planner gives us required gas volume for the dive.
After finishing planning the dive - we need to download all mixes, settings and alarms to our mixed gas dive computer, and we are ready!


Suunto D9tx is very new instrument in our market. It inherited trimix functions from HelO2 and majority of functions of D9. Now it allows us to program up to 8 mixes with 8-99% of Oxygen and from 0-92% Helium. This mixed gas dive computer comes with in-built Dive Planner for setting gas mixes, bottom times and decompression schedule.
